Several Medicine Hat area athletes medal at Alberta Winter Games

Local athletes won two gold medals, one silver and five bronze for a total of eight during individual competition.

In team events, Medicine Hat players struck gold in two events, and silver and bronze in one event each.

The Zone One female 15U volleyball team won gold, with three Medicine Hat players, Lyrah Cunningham, Brooklyn McShannock, and Dylen Pancoast.

Three local athletes also competed in the Ringette tournament, each representing a different zone, and each winning a medal.

A battle of Medicine Hat players had Breanna Lanuk and Zone Five win gold over Emma Pinnell and Zone Four, who took home silver. Lacey Gibney of Seven Persons won bronze with Zone Seven.

Five local athletes won wrestling medals.

Medicine Hat winners included gold for Nero Jenson in the Male 47kg category and Hannah Streifel in the Female 80kg category, and bronze for Aubrey Kay in the Female 56kg and Dominic Zecevic in the Male 34-37kg.

Redcliff’s Charlie Knudslien won bronze in the Female 72kg category.

A bronze was won in archery by Medicine Hat’s Emersyn McNabb in the 12-14 Cub Female Compound category.

Two Medicine Hat gymnasts medaled. Camryn Kingsley brought home silver in the J07 Bars, and Alivia Theofan won bronze in the J07 vault.

More than 100 competitors represented southern Alberta’s Zone One.

A total of 38 medals were won by Zone One, the fourth-highest among the eight provincial zones based on gold medals, and fifth with total medals being the main factor.

Those included 13 gold, eight silver and 17 bronze.
