A drive to collect signatures to hold a referendum on Alberta quitting Canada made a stop in Medicine Hat, and was busy.

Stay Free Alberta hosted a signature session at the Wyndham Garden Hotel on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The parking lot was filled, and the event had hundreds on location to sign the petition.

A few hours into the event, a representative said there had already been about 500 people to sign.

On social media early Thursday morning, the Alberta Free Medicine Hat group claimed 1,800 signatures were added through the event.

The group needs to collect nearly 178,000 signatures across the province before May.

Long lines have been reported across the province at signing events.

Another petition signing event is scheduled for the German Harmony Hall in Redcliff on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
