The Friends of Medalta Society in Medicine Hat is celebrating its 40 year anniversary

The Friends of Medalta Society is marking its 40th anniversary in 2026, highlighting four decades of preserving and programming the nationally significant industrial pottery site in Medicine Hat.

Executive director Jessica Whitford said the milestone year offers a chance to reflect on Medalta’s legacy while looking ahead to new programming and community engagement.

Medalta is currently closed to the public until Feb. 4 as staff prepare for the year ahead.

Whitford said popular offerings will continue, including community pottery classes, children’s camps and summer ceramics workshops, and with support from a local family, the Archaeological Field School will return in July.

The anniversary year will also include new exhibitions, such as Through the Decades: The Legacy of Medicine Hat Pottery at Home in the Yuill Family Gallery, along with a revitalized Medalta gift shop, which will remain open online during the site’s seasonal closure.
