Holiday Check Stop Campaign

Medicine Hat Police Service holiday check stop campaign about to begin

Dec 2, 2025 | 11:36 AM

The Medicine Hat Police Service is reminding everyone who will be driving to holiday events to plan and ensure a safe ride home.

Throughout December, drivers in Medicine Hat can expect increased officer presence and roadside check stops to promote safe roads.

Some check stops will be advertised, such as those scheduled between Dec. 13 and Dec. 21, while others may occur at any time, over the coming weeks.

Officers will conduct a Mandatory Alcohol Screening at the check stop, where drivers must provide a breath sample. The quick process will give immediate results.

Drivers who pass the screening will be able to continue on their way with minimal delay.

Police say that the goal is to keep disruptions to a minimum while ensuring everyone’s safety.

In 2025, the MHPS charged approximately 145 drivers under the Immediate Roadside Sanction program.

Police say that every death and injury caused by impaired driving is preventable. Adding that we all share responsibility for keeping our roads safe, whether the cause of impairment is alcohol or drugs.

If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, police say to contact 9-1-1 immediately.

They also recommend that, before heading out to your next holiday celebration, you plan a safe ride home by using a designated driver, a taxi, or a rideshare.

Police say there are no excuses for driving impaired. Let’s work together to keep Medicine Hat’s roads safe this holiday season.
