HALO Air Ambulance has returned to full operational service

Nov 4, 2025 | 12:53 PM

HALO Air Ambulance announced on Tuesday that it has officially returned to full operational service, resuming its critical role as southern Alberta’s dedicated helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) provider.

The organization said in a news release that it worked closely with Emergency Health Services (EHS) over the past several week to review and strengthen operational processes that support safe and effective air ambulance missions.

HALO adds that the result is a more unified and coordinated approach that enhances communication and safety for all personnel involved.

“Our priority has always been patient and crew safety,” HALO chief executive officer Paul Carolan said.

“We took immediate action, worked collaboratively with our partners, and used this as an opportunity to strengthen what was already a very strong safety culture.”

As part of the HEMS reinstatement, HALO said they have adopted new operational measures emphasizing structured pre-flight briefings, enhanced documentation, and increased in-flight communications with EHS paramedics.

The group said these measures ensure clarity, coordination, and safety in all joint air ambulance missions.

“These communities we serve depend on HALO every day”, Carolan said.

“We are proud to be back in the air, continuing our mission to provide rapid, high-quality emergency medical response across southern Alberta”.

Emergency Health Services also offered comment in the news release.

“EHS-Alberta values its partnership with HALO Air Ambulance,” Les Fisher, interim executive director, people, transformation, and support, EHS-Alberta said.

“The collaborative work undertaken over the past several weeks ensures the highest standard of safety and patient care as we continue to deliver critical emergency health services to Albertans.”

In mid-September, EHS temporarily suspended air ambulance services provided by HALO due to a safety incident.

Carolan said at that time, they wanted to be clear that no patients, medical staff, or crew were injured during this event.

HALO Air Ambulance has been in continuous service since 2007, providing lifesaving helicopter operations across more than 50,000 square kilometres.

The organization is a charitable, donor-supported program that partners with municipalities, first responders, and Emergency Health Services to deliver essential emergency care for rural and remote Albertans.
