Video: Memorial Walk in downtown Medicine Hat spreads awareness for family violence prevention

Family Violence Prevention Month kicks off with the Memorial Walk, hosted by the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.

Members of the women’s shelter handed out purple ribbons to everyone involved with the walk to help raise awareness about family violence prevention.

The ribbons are a symbol of family violence prevention and are tied all over downtown Medicine Hat.

The walk started at Medicine Hat City Hall after Mayor Linnsie Clark signed the proclamation declaring Family Prevention Month.

Executive director Natasha Carvalho said it’s amazing to see the community come out to show their support.

“It really shows to me that people support the work that we do and understand the seriousness of family violence in our community,” Carvalho said.

“I think it really makes me feel that people understand that they have a role to play in helping to end family violence.”

“It’s not just about professionals in the field, but it’s about the community as well in terms of raising awareness and supporting people going through that,” she added.

Many other events will be hosted by the women’s shelter throughout Family Violence Prevention Month.
