Maple Creek’s Parsonage leads bull riding event at Canadian Finals Rodeo after two days

Maple Creek bull rider Jared Parsonage sits at the top of the standings at the Canadian Finals Rodeo at Rogers Place in Edmonton as the only contestant with two scoring rides after two days.

A dozen riders are competing in the event, with Parsonage ranked third coming into the competition.

Through 24 rides at the event, the bull riders have only stayed on for eight seconds a total of seven times.

This has given Parsonage a healthy lead in the aggregate scoring with 169.25, with three rides to go.

Thursday, he scored the second-best ride of the day with an 84; the day prior, his ride placed him third with a score of 85.25.

The top score on Thursday went to Jacob Gardner of Fort St. John, B.C., with an 88.25, the top-scoring ride so far this year at the CFR.

Two riders from southwestern Saskatchewan, Grady Young of Leader and Dakota Buttar of Eatonia, will look to register a ride on Friday after being bucked off on the two previous days.

Also from Maple Creek, a pair of 15-year-old riders compete in the junior steer riding event.

Dayton Cronkhite had the top score on Wednesday with a 76, with the fourth-best on Thursday at a 71.5, for a two-day total of 147.5.

Cronkhite sits in fourth overall, while fellow rider Cecil Baynton has been bucked off twice through his first two rides to sit at the bottom of the standings in sixth.

Baynton will have three more chances to stay on past the eight-second buzzer to climb up the standings.

Barrel racer Lynette Broadway of Brooks had a more successful run on Thursday with a ride of 13.88 seconds, the third-best time of the day.

On Wednesday, she had an official time of 19.02 to place last in the 12-rider competition. After two days, Broadway sits in 10th spot.

In team roping Devin Wigemyr of Brooks partnered with Clint Weston of Fort Macleod are fourth overall with times of 5.6 on day one and 5.2 on day two.

Rylan Brost of Consul, Sask. and teammate Jesse Popescul of Glentworth, Sask. are sixth overall with times of 6.2 on day one and 5.9 on day two.

The CFR continues in Edmonton on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday will have two events, the first at 11 a.m. and Championship Night starting at 6:30 p.m.
