Medicine Hat Mavericks season done after loss to Red Sox

Aug 8, 2025 | 7:55 AM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks baseball season came to an end Thursday night in Regina.

The Red Sox jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two inning, and the Mavs were unable to catch up the rest of the way, losing 13-7.

The Mavs chipped away at the lead throughout the contest scoring a pair in the second and third innings to go with a final three run push with the season on the line in the ninth.

The Red Sox were equal to the task though with a pair of runs in the fourth, and four runs in the seventh.

The Mavs did outhit the Red Sox for the second game in a row, but struggled to get runners across the plate leaving 16 total on base throughout the contest.

The Red Sox stranded nine runners on base during the game.

Chris Spry got the win for the Red Sox on the mound striking out seven batters through six innings of work.

Xander Roberts took the loss for the Mavs, after being chased from the bump with only one out in the second inning.

He gave up seven runs on six hits, with only three of the runs earned, with errors proving costly for the Mavs early in the contest.

The Mavs had lost game one of the East Division Semi-Final playoff series by a 6-2 score Wednesday night at Athletic Park in front of 1,717 fans.

The Red Sox swept the series 2 games to none and will face the winner of the Saskatoon Berries and Moose Jaw Miller Express in the East Division Finals.

The Berries and Miller Express face off in game three Friday night with that series tied 1-1.

Some positives can be drawn from the Mavs season, as the 34-21 regular season record was an improvement on the 33-23 mark from 2024.

The 34 regular season wins is the most the team has had since the Western Major Baseball League became the Western Canadian Baseball League in 2019.

The last time the Mavs had more wins was during its WMBL championship season in 2018 when the team went 38-9 in the regular season.

This is the second year in a row the Mavs have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

The team had made it all the way to the league finals back in 2023, eventually losing to the Okotoks Dawgs.
