“Nothing can separate us from the love of God.”
Romans 8:39
Peter Dykstra, beloved husband of Nancy Dykstra, went to be with his Lord and Savior at the age of 84 years. He leaves to cherish his memory: six sons, Michael (Irene), Steven, Jeffrey (Helen Fong), Kevin (Jennifer), Peter (Lina) and Nathan (Haley); six grandchildren, Abra, Katie, Emelie, Holly, Dirk and Phoebe; sisters, Shirley and Wyke; brothers-in-law, John (Carol) and Charles (Leona); sisters-in-law, Betty (Ed) and Shirley (George) as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Dirk and Diena Dykstra; brother, Glenn; sisters, Fennie and Tina; brothers-in-law, Bertus, Fred, John, Bernard and Jim as well as a sister-in-law, Mattie. Peter was born on August 16, 1940 in Meteren, Gelderland, The Netherlands. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 13 with his parents and three siblings. The family settled in Medicine Hat where Peter attended Montreal Street School. At age 15, he started his first job, delivering telegrams for the Canadian Pacific Railroad via bicycle. Following that, he became a journeyman cabinet maker, later adapting those skills to become a well respected finishing carpenter. Peter will be remembered for his strong faith in God, wood working skills, work ethic, wisdom, wit and humour as well as his willingness to help others. He was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church, taking on many roles including elder, deacon, cadet counselor and youth leader. In addition, he assisted with the construction of the Medicine Hat Christian School. He loved his family and spending time with them. He enjoyed reading, listening to music and especially listening to the Medicine Hat Tiger games on the radio. Peter struggled with Heart Disease and Parkinsons for many years, but through it all, he kept his faith and trust in God. The family sends their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Ciubotaru and Dr. Jeraj; the wonderful nurses at Haven View; Peter’s recreational therapist, Katie and his occupational therapist, Kaylei; friends, Tim, Tom and Jason as well as Pastor Murray for all of the love, care and support Peter received. He will be greatly missed. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at the church starting one hour prior to the service.
