Medicine Hat man charged with dangerous driving

An 18-year old Medicine Hat man has been charged with dangerous operation and flight from a police officer after a traffic incident on June 29.

At approximately 4:15 a.m. that day a Medicine Hat Police Service Patrol member attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on a vehicle that did not have a licence plate.

Police said once the police emergency equipment was activated the driver responded by accelerating from police at a high rate of speed travelling through a red traffic light.

The officer did not pursue the vehicle, as they due to significant risk to the public.

Approximately 15 minutes later, the vehicle was located in the downtown area where a passenger was observed exiting the vehicle.

The passenger was taken into custody and the vehicle fled once again at a high rate of speed, where due to public safety concerns, the vehicle was not pursued, police said.

Through investigation the driver was identified and arrested without incident at his residence on June 30.

He was held for a bail hearing and released to appear at Alberta Court of Justice on August 7.
