Heat warning issued for Medicine Hat, southeast Alberta and west Saskatchewan

A heat warning was issued for large areas of southeast Alberta and western Saskatchewan on Monday afternoon, including Medicine Hat, Redcliff and Maple Creek.

Environment Canada is forecasting high temperatures over 30 C with overnight lows near 20 C are expected beginning Tuesday and continuing on Wednesday.

Cooler temperatures are forecast on Thursday.

Residents of under the weather alert are recommended to consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day, take frequent breaks from the heat and spend time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.

They are also advised to drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.

The national weather agency alert added that people should check for children or pets before exiting their vehicle.

They should also monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness.

Pay particular attention to individuals that can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat including infants, children, seniors, and individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers, as well as those who are socially isolated, Environment Canada said.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
