Brooks and Bassano RCMP conduct ‘Operation Street Sweep’

The RCMP detachments in Brooks and Bassano says it issued dozens of tickets and made several outstanding arrests during a targeted effort last week.

“Operation Street Sweep” carried out on June 3 as a continued effort to enhance public safety and hold offenders accountable.

It included the Brooks/Redcliff RCMP Traffic Unit, Brooks and County of Newell Enforcement Peace Officers.

Mounties said in a news release the aim was to locate wanted persons on warrants, conduct condition compliance checks on previously charged offenders and suppress crime and aggressive drivers.

As a result of the operation, a total of 38 traffic tickets were issued, 25 traffic warnings were issued, 19 outstanding warrants on 10 individuals were executed, three of which were held for bail hearings, and 12 compliance checks were done on persons bound by court conditions.

Brooks RCMP Detachment Staff Sgt. Robert Harms said Operation Street Sweep is a new component to the Brooks and Bassano Detachment’s Policing Priorities and Crime Reduction initiatives for 2025/2026.

“The operation was very successful and I thank the many officers and support staff involved, including our key partners, who all contribute and help us work towards safer communities and roadways,” Harms said.

Bassano Detachment Commander Sgt. Joe Schmidt said Operation Street Sweep was is an excellent initiative to highlight the RCMP’s capabilities and resources to pull together and have a successful outcome.

“The partnership between Brooks and Bassano RMCP and our agency’s relationships with our rural/municipal Peace Officers and RCMP Traffic Units allows us to work cohesively in a focused and proactive effort to make all our rural and municipal communities safer,” Schmidt said.
