The Penticton Vees have selected Portland Winterhawks goaltender Marek Schlenker in the 2025 WHL Expansion Draft.

Schlenker grew up in Medicine Hat prior to moving to Okotoks with his family.

He is the son of National Hockey League referee Chris Schlenker, who grew up in Medicine Hat and worked for the Medicine Hat Police Service prior to moving on to professional refereeing opportunities.

Schlenker appeared in 30 games with the Winterhawks in his rookie season with the team.

The 2006-born netminder had a 13-10-1-0 record with a 3.70 goals-against average and a .893 save percentage.

Schlenker, an alumni of Medicine Hat Minor Hockey, played for the South Alberta Hockey Academy U18 Prep team during the 2023-24 season.

He was also an affiliated player with the Brooks Bandits prior to their move from the Alberta Junior Hockey League to the British Columbia Hockey League.

The Medicine Hat Tigers and Spokane Chiefs who start the Western Hockey League Finals on Friday at Co-op Place were both given an accommodation for the draft.

The winner of the series will have an extension to submit their list through the conclusion of the 2025 Memorial Cup.

The losing team in the 2025 WHL Championship will be required to submit its protected list on the second day after elimination.
