City of Medicine Hat signs off on update to regional development plan

Apr 22, 2025 | 6:58 PM

The City of Medicine Hat on Tuesday signed off on an update to its regional development plan, completed in partnership with Redcliff and Cypress County.

The other two parties may still need to grant final approval to the Intermunicipal Development Plan.

The update to its regional blueprint, started about a year ago, aims to save space for the agriculture industry and gives the county more room to grow, among other collaborative goals.

Part of the proposed IDP is an agri-industrial area set aside for business potential.

Ted Nestor, a Medicine Hat senior planner, said last year a pair of infrastructure projects — the Highway 3 twinning initiative and an expected extended runway at the Medicine Hat Regional Airport — made it a prime location.

Planning for the proposal was carried out by the intermunicipal project group, a committee made up of two representatives from each member municipality.

Mayor Linnsie Clark and Coun. Shila Sharps represented Medicine Hat on the working group.

CHAT News has requested confirmation from Redcliff and Cypress County that the plan was passed by each council.

This is a developing story. More details to follow.
