City of Medicine Hat to start preparing housing tax incentive

Mar 17, 2025 | 10:37 PM

Medicine Hat city staff will start preparing a multi-year tax incentive after council approval Monday with the aim to drive the development of housing units amid a national housing shortage.

Coun. Darren Hirsch says he wasn’t entirely sold on the multi-unit housing incentive.

He says if economic development is done right, housing developments would follow more businesses and jobs.

The city currently has a grant program for multi-unit housing.

Coun. Ramona Robins says the tax incentive approach will go further as its not limited by the amount of cash in an account.

“This would be different because we’re not setting money aside, rather we’re deferring taxes once the property is built, or as it’s being built,” Robins said.

“I think there’s a big benefit there because the grant money eventually runs out, but the tax incentive can cover a lot more building.”

This is a developing story. More details to follow.
