Medicine Hat police have charged four youth after finding firearms and other weapons at a Flats neighbourhood residence.

Police launched an investigation after hearing that a group of youths were in possession of various firearms that were allegedly used in violent criminal activities.

The major crimes unit, with help from tactical officers, executed a search warrant at the Industrial Avenue Southeast residence on Tuesday.

Police found and seized a sawed-off, defaced Ruger 10/22 rifle with live ammunition, a replica handgun, bear spray and a machete.

The four youth were charged with assault with a weapon, various possession counts, defacing or removing a firearm’s serial number, uttering threats and three counts of breaching release conditions.

Two of those charged were remanded into provincial youth custody. The others were released on bail with conditions, pending their court appearance in April.

Under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the identities of all parties involved remain confidential.
