The Valentine’s Day-themed Love A Shelter campaign aims to highlights workers at Women’s Shelters across Alberta who support those fleeing violence and abuse.

Students from across the province where invited to send Valentine’s Day cards to the staff at their local domestic violence shelter.

There were classes around Medicine Hat participating, including one within the Catholic school division.

A class of Grade 3 students at St. Patrick’s School in Medicine Hat were busy making Valentine’s Day cards leading up to the special day.

Their teacher Carys Robles said that when she heard about the opportunity to make cards in support of those at the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter, she saw it as an amazing way to give back to the community.

“I think by this age, they’re kind of starting to realize the importance of the community and how we each have a role, so it’s a nice way to kind of remind them of that and show them that,” Robles said.

The students in the class, worked away on there cards after receiving direction from their teacher.

They were proud to be able to show support to others.

“I think they’re gonna be really happy that they’re getting recognized for helping people without homes,” Grade 3 student Nate said.

“All the people who don’t have any homes are safe and they don’t have to, get really hurt and they don’t have to lose their jobs or anything if they have children,” said classmate Shiloh.

“I feel like it will be very nice for people to be able to make Valentine’s cards for anybody who’s working very hard or who lost their homes,” she added.

“To make the people at the women’s shelter that have worked there for a long time happy,” a Grade 3 student named Logan said.

“It’s making people happy at the women’s shelter that we’re giving it to,” a Grade 3 student named Blaire said.

Teacher Robles said she loves seeing the student piece the work together.

“I think my favorite thing right now is just seeing how excited they were to start,” Robles said.

“As soon as we said we were making Valentine’s for the Women’s Day Shelter, you could see all their eyes lit up,” she added.

“They were very excited to do it, so that’s probably my favorite part.”

Robles adds this is a great way to teach kids the importance of our community and the importance of helping each other and caring.
