Medicine Hat council approves budget amendment policy

Jan 6, 2025 | 7:05 PM

Medicine Hat city council approved a formal process for handling changes to the city’s approved budget.

An amendment proposed by Coun. Shila Sharps changed the required reporting on budget transfers from an annual basis to a tri-annual basis.

The amendment added that council also directed administration to prepare and present a educational presentation on the city’s reserves and the policies associated with them.

Managing Director Dennis Egert said in response to a query from Coun. Robert Dumanowski that a switch from once a year to three times a year is doable for staff.

The amendment and the changed policy was approved unanimously.

Dumanowski said he was in favour of the policy at large.

“I’m sure staff would appreciate, and will appreciate, if we support this,” Dumanowski said.

He pointed out the policy puts the city in alignment with other municipalities.

“With our uniqueness in our energy business unit…it makes us even more necessary for us to measure our policies, so I’m happy to support,” the councillor added.

This is a developing story. More details to follow.
