Medicine Hat artist selling calendars to raise money for seniors centre

A Medicine Hat artist is selling calendars that include painted works of the city through the Veiner Centre as part of a fundraiser.

Thirteen original paintings fill the pages, each of them a landmark located in Medicine Hat.

It’s part of an effort to support the not-for-profit organization that provides for older adults in the city.

Michele Winger displays the calendar’s cover, her painting of the Saamis Tepee. Jayk Sterkenburg/CHAT News.

Michelle Winger, retired accountant turned self-employed artist, said that all proceeds will go towards the Veiner Centre.

She said the centre is an essential amenity to the city.

“I think the Veiner Center is extremely important to Medicine Hat,” she told CHAT News on Tuesday.

“It gives a place for adults aged fifty plus to have social interaction with others, and to learn skills or have physical activities that we may not be able to do otherwise.”

Each page in the calendar also features a member or volunteer of the Veiner Centre.

Landmarks included in the calendar are the historic Cecil Hotel, Assiniboia Inn, brick kilns of Medalta Potteries, and Canadian Pacific Railway Station.

“I spent my 38 years as an accountant convinced that I had zero art in me. So I never tried anything, even doodling,” said Winger.

“Then COVID hit and I had the opportunity to work all day, every day on art with no interruptions,” she added.

“I got at least a decade worth of painting into one year.”

Those interested can support the Veiner Centre and display a variety of locally inspired artwork on their own wall by purchasing a calendar at the centre.
