GST/HST tax break begins on Saturday

Dec 14, 2024 | 9:00 AM

The federal government has announced that on Saturday the Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) break will be put into effect after it was passed into law.

It is set to begin on Dec. 14 through Feb. 15, 2025 and will give Canadians a tax break on multiple essentials such as food and beverage related services, and children’s items such as clothing, diapers, car seats, and toys.

It also includes jigsaw puzzles, video game consoles, controllers, video games, physical books, printed newspapers, and Christmas and similar decorative trees.

The GST/HST should automatically come off when purchasing these items between the designated dates but if you’re still charged tax, it’s important to keep the receipt and simply ask the retailer to refund the tax.
