Polls close in Georgia’s election that could take it toward the EU or into Russia’s orbit
TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — Polls closed in Georgia’s parliamentary election Saturday in a vote widely regarded as a referendum on membership of the European Union. The outcome of the vote will likely determine whether the South Caucasus country gets back on track to EU membership of if it falls into authoritarianism and Russia’s orbit.
Both the ruling party Georgian Dream and the opposition said they want Georgia to join the EU but the country’s membership process was suspended earlier this year by Brussels after the ruling party passed laws cracking down on freedom of speech.
