Third time wasn’t the charm, but the fourth was.

The Medicine Hat Tigers finally beat the Red Deer Rebels on Wednesday night at Co-op Place after the two teams met for their fourth matchup of the 2024-25 season so far.

The final tally was 3-0.

It was a raucous, physical game on home ice that resulted in power play chances for both teams.

But it took half the game for the scoring to start.

Andrew Basha scored halfway through the second frame with assists from Ryder Ritchie and Hayden Harsanyi.

It would be another 20 minutes until the Tigers scored again, this time with the team’s first line.

Matthew Paranych scored his second goal of the season and his first since the season opener halfway through the third period. Gavin McKenna and newly-minted captain Oasiz Wiesblatt were noted for the assists.

After the Rebels pulled their goalie towards the end of the game, Markus Ruck scored with assists from Paranych and Kadon McCann.

Recently-acquired Harrison Meneghin was able to secure a fifth career shutout in his second Tigers start since joining from the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The Tigers still have a negative win-loss record after Wednesday’s game with two wins and four losses to start the season off after they were No. 1 in the Canadian Hockey League’s pre-season rankings.

Tigers superfan Dale Engel, who attended Wednesday’s game, was happy to see the orange and white finally pull one over on their Central Division rivals.

“(It) was great to finally get a win against Red Deer after three losses,” Engel told CHAT News, saying it came with “with assistance throughout the entire lineup.”

“Young guys stepped up and played some valuable minutes,” he added.

“Winning ways moving forward.”
