John Clement Halladay passed away peacefully on August 24, 2024, at the age of 74, with his loving wife by his side. John was born on November 24, 1949, in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.
John was predeceased by his mother, Midge Halladay and his father Hugh Halladay. John is survived by the love of his life, Valerie Jean (Rice) and his three sons, Jerry of Calgary, Alberta, Lindsey (Mindy) of Medicine Hat and their 4 boys, Kayden (Abby), Jaren, Carter and Tyler, and Nathan (Stephanie) of Sandy, Utah and their 3 boys and 1 daughter, Wesley, John, Mary, and Hugh.
John is also survived by his stepmother Darlene, his 3 brothers Don (Randee), Harvey (Kaye) and Richard (Lana) and 4 sisters Peggy (Ron), Jayne, Helene, Sharon and multiple nieces and nephews. John also loved his wife Val’s family, especially his mother and father-in-law Ruth and Wes Rice (both deceased) of Magrath and their extended family.
John spent much of his youth in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta where his family farmed and ranched. The family ranch is where he learned to work hard and developed his love of digging in the dirt.
John, or Grandpa (his preferred name), loved life, created great memories, and had many wonderful friends. Material possessions were of small value to Grandpa, but he loved both his wife and family.
John met his wife Val at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital where he was recovering from a severe case of pneumonia. On June 14, 1975, John and Val were married in a small ceremony in Magrath surrounded by their closest loved ones. Then on August 26, 1978, John and Val were sealed for time and eternity in the Cardston Alberta Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
John loved and adopted Val’s sons Jerry and Lindsey. Nathan’s arrival in 1976 completed their family. John loved Val and his family dearly.
In 1977, John and Val bought a 7-acre piece of land in the Paramatta Valley, just outside of Medicine Hat. Over the next 45 years, John spent countless hours building and maintaining their dream home. This home and life in the valley played a central role in creating a foundation of strength and love and provided a cherished gathering place for friends and family. You could often find John on his tractor, fixing irrigation pipes or visiting neighbours. He also served as Director and Secretary / Treasurer for the Parramatta Water Co-op Ltd.
John had an optimistic view of life and looked for the best in every situation and person. His kind and gentle nature drew others to him and was cherished by all who knew him.
Grandpa enjoyed watching his grandkids grow and develop into young adults. He especially liked his ‘Tim the Toolman’ sessions with his grandsons showing them the many types and uses of tools. His only granddaughter, Mary, could melt Grandpa’s heart with one look. Her wishes were his top priorities!
His membership in the of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was special in John’s life. John loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and always knew his Saviour Jesus Christ was near and loved him. John enjoyed serving in the church where his main area of responsibility was typically something with finances.
John always loved his work, especially his opportunity to work for Criterion Catalysts and Technologies Canada Inc. as their Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) Advisor. Before Criterion, he worked in farming, ranching, government service, forestry, road construction, gravel crushing, seismic work, oil fields, and operating caterpillars.
John loved his life and all those around him! Please celebrate life as he did – with a smile on your face and love in your heart. John’s greatest desire is that he left this world better than it was when he came. He hopes his family and grandchildren will carry that desire forward and do the same!
