Medicine Hat police use crisis negotiator in domestic violence complaint call

Police used a crisis negotiator to de-escalate a tense situation and take a suspect into custody in Medicine Hat’s north end early Saturday morning.

Patrol officers responded to a domestic violence complaint shortly after 7 p.m. on Friday at a condominium complex located in the 1600 block of Saamis Drive Northwest, police said.

At the outset of the incident, police believed that a weapon had been involved in the incident and evacuated occupants from the complex, according to a statement posted by police early on Saturday.

The Medicine Hat Police Service’s tactical unit, explosive disposal team and crisis negotiators were on-hand to assist with resolving the incident.

Those who were evacuated were displaced from their homes until the matter was resolved, police said.

At 1:01 a.m. on Saturday morning, a 27-year-old suspect was taken into police custody and is now await a judicial release hearing.

The suspect is facing charges of forcible confinement, assault by choking, breach of probation and breach of a conditional sentence order, police said.

Police said the Medicine Hat Fire Service and Alberta Health Services assisted with the incident.

Meanwhile, police were also responding to a a fatal motor vehicle incident in the south end Meadowlands neighbourhood Friday evening.
