Micro-surfacing pilot project comes to Medicine Hat’s Crescent Heights

Staggered closures will shut down several roads in Medicine Hat’s Northeast Crescent Heights neighbourhood starting Aug. 20.

The closures are for a micro-surfacing pilot project that aims to improve the pavement’s longevity.

There are three stages to the project. Each stage will span three blocks, the city said in a news release.

The closures will take place on 20th Street Northeast, Seventh Avenue Northeast and 17th Street Northeast.

Each stage will take approximately one day to complete. Crews will begin on the 20th Street, then shift to Seventh Avenue before finishing on 17th Street, according to a city news release.

Construction is expected to be completed and all roads re-opened by Aug. 26, weather permitting.

This pilot project utilizes a method of pavement preservation called micro-surfacing, which is designed to seal, protect and prolong the life of existing asphalt, the city said.

Micro-surfacing has proven to be an effective road rehabilitation process for crack repair, rut filling or surfacing the entire roadway.

This pilot project is a key component of the city’s transportation infrastructure renewal strategy.
