Heat warning back in effect for most of southern Alberta

Aug 1, 2024 | 9:28 AM

High temperatures are back across most of the region.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for several communities including Lethbridge, Taber, Medicine Hat, Cardston, Milk River, Claresholm, and Brooks.

Daytime high temperatures are expected to range from 29 and 36 degrees Celsius for the rest of this week, while overnight lows will be between 14 and 18.

Cooler temperatures are forecast by the beginning of next week.

The public is asked to take steps to stay safe from the heat, including:

  • Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
  • Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
  • Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.

Environment Canada says to monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, such as high body temperature, lack of seat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness.

At particular risk are children, seniors and those with chronic health conditions.
