Grant James Roulston, loving husband of Suzanne, passed away suddenly at home on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at the age of 71 years. Along with Suzanne, left to remember Grant are his children, Rachael (Scott), Joanne (Mike), and Christine (Ryan); five grandchildren, Owen, Reese, Lincoln, Kinsley, and Gracelyn; siblings, Janice (Glen), and Rodney (Debbie); in-laws Marie, Noella (Lester), Rene, Annette (Henry), and Johnny as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Grant was predeceased by his father, David Roulston; mother, Margaret Roulston (Bedwell); brother, Clifton Roulston; and mother-in-law, Rosa Lemoine and sisters-in-law, Jaqueline den Brok and Rosalie Lemoine.
Grant was born on June 5, 1953, in Russell, Manitoba to David and Margaret Roulston. He was raised on the farm south of Marchwell, Saskatchewan, along with his older brothers and sister, Cliff, Janice and Rodney. Grant went to elementary school at the Ingleside school, and then graduated high school in Langenburg in 1971. After high school, Grant went to the University of Saskatchewan to study agriculture.
Grant’s life was deeply intertwined with the land. He started his career at the I.M.C. Potash Mine in 1973, but his heart was always in farming. Grant married Suzanne on August 1, 1975, and they moved to the Roulston homestead where they started their family. Rachael was born on July 24, 1976, and Joanne on December 8, 1979. In the spring of 1981, Grant and Suzanne purchased a farm just southeast of Langenburg, a place that would be more than just a home but a testament to his dedication and hard work. On June 11, 1986, Christine was born completing the family.
Grant and Suzanne farmed until spring 2004, when they chose to retire and relocate to Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Grant had many passions, farming being one of them. Many of our fondest memories are driving with him on the tractor or combine, hauling grain to the elevator, or picking him up after a long day in the field. Harvest and suppers in the field with Dad will forever be engrained in our memories, as those were some of Grant’s happiest times. Another passion of his was travel. We all got to experience wonderful places with him, such as Cuba, Mexico, Europe, Hawaii, the Bahamas, New York City (which he was surprised to like and went to twice), Canada, and various other US cities. His most recent trips included battlefield visits in France, Holland and Italy to walk in the footsteps of Canadian soldiers, including three uncles who served in WWII.
Grant was a quiet, humble, kind and generous man. We will miss his regular visits, stories, generosity, advice and willingness to create memories. He was an exceptional Grandpa, never hesitating to pick up grandchildren or play with them. He attended hockey games, horseback riding lessons, and school events. He loved spending time with all of them, and most of all, spoiling them.
Grant will forever be loved and missed by all who knew him.
Through sun and rain, you tilled the land,
A legacy of love, a life so grand,
In every harvest, we’ll see your face,
And feel the emptiness, none can replace.
The earth, a witness to your toil,
Now embraces you, a final uncoil,
In the farmer’s field,
Where you once roamed.
We’ll miss you dearly,
Your love, our home.
