Here’s what to know about the cashless midway at the Medicine Hat Stampede

The Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede is moving to a cashless system for its rides this year.

That’s caused some backlash in the community but organizers say it should make it easier for visitors and allow the company running the rides — West Coast Amusements — to find out what what rides are popular.

Here’s what you need to know, according to organizers:

Getting money on the wristband

Wristbands can be purchased throughout the midway at the kiosk booths.

At the booths, guests will find ticket ambassadors. There will also be iPads that will give the option to pay either by cash or credit to fill the wristband.

It’s best to use credit for filling the wristband since guests won’t get their change back using cash.

For example, say organizers, if someone uses two $50 bills but only wants $60 on the wristband, they will get all $100 instead.

Using the wristband

Once a guest has added money to their wristband, they can scan its QR code at rides, games and food vendors.

Leftover credit

Any leftover credit on the wristband can be used again next year providing the QR code is not disturbed, organizers say.
