Indigenous filmmaker aims to showcase Medicine Hat

Soncho Austin wants to showcase Medicine Hat’s identity through a new video series.

His project, Meet Medicine Hat, is a YouTube channel and social media project dedicated to telling the stories of the Gas City.

It started when the Indigenous artist and filmmaker was awarded a professional video camera after participating in Vovo Production’s Empowered Filmmaker course at the Miywasin Centre.

Austin says the initial response has been “overwhelmingly positive”, with the documentary-style series garnering “significant local attention.”

Now, he’s worked on several videos posted to various platforms to tell the stories of Medicine Hat.

These stories include a local music producer, an Indigenous artist and a potter and dancer, among other subjects.

All the videos can be viewed on his YouTube channel.

He’s now asking the community for help to maintain the quality of the videos.
