The Medicine Hat Mavericks have just passed the mid-point of their 56-game regular season.

The team’s completed 29 games and are sitting at a record of 16 wins, 13 losses.

Sitting in third place in the East Divison of the Western Canadian Baseball League, the Mavs are a half a game back of second place Moose Jaw and four games back of first place Regina.

Assistant Coach Tory Nelson said Thursday the team has had a lot of ups and downs so far.

“I think we are better than what our record is showing right now,” Nelson said.

“I think that last week of baseball we just had, we had some very good games against the top teams in the league, and we know we’re good enough,” he added.

“It was very good to see that, I think the second half of the season is going to be our best half of the season.”

Nelson adds the Mavs have started to put together a lot of good ball games recently, and knows the team hasn’t played anywhere near their best baseball.

The Mavericks dropped a close 6-4 contest against the 23-7 Sylvan Lake Gulls on Tuesday at Athletic Park, a West Division team now on a seven game winning streak the Mavs won’t have to face again unless they meet them in the league finals.

Thursday the Mavs are on the highway to Saskatchewan for games in that province over the next five days.

Their first opponent is the Saskatoon Berries who they will take on Thursday and Friday night at Cairns Field.

The are important games against a division rival only two and a half games back of the Mavericks in the standings.

The next stop is Regina on Saturday and Sunday, looking to make up ground on the first place Red Sox at Currie Field.

A stop in Weyburn Monday to battle East Division basement dwelling Beavers before coming back to Athletic Park on Tuesday to host the Swift Current 57’s, who only sit a half a game ahead of the Beavers in the East.
