It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gladys May Berreth (Congram) of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Edwin “Wheat King” Berreth on May 9, 2024, at the age of 104 just seven days short of her 105th birthday. Gladys leaves to cherish her memory one son Clifford Berreth (Myra Lutz), seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Besides her husband Edwin, Gladys was predeceased by her parents George and Christine Congram, her son Jerome Berreth, her daughter Phyllis Wilde, son-in-law Wayne Wilde, granddaughter Valerie Wilde, six brothers and four sisters. Gladys was the last remaining member of her family. Born on May 16, 1919, on a farm outside of Piapot, Saskatchewan; she took her schooling at Prairie Star School. Gladys married Edwin Berreth on August 30, 1937, and lived on the Cumberlands farm for three years and then moved into the village of Piapot and continued farming until 1957, when they moved to Maple Creek. While in Maple Creek, Gladys worked at the local hospital as a Lab Aid. In 1970, Gladys and Edwin moved to Medicine Hat. She started work as a Ward Aid in Riverview Nursing Home where she worked for 9 ½ years and finally retired on her 65th birthday. Mom’s last retirement came in 2008 at the age of 89 after volunteering at The Post for 15 years. Not only did Mom enjoy the work at The Post but she became very good friends with all of the staff members. Mom was an avid gardener, enjoyed reading, watching sports on TV and playing cards with her friends as well as listening to music and taking various bus tours throughout Western Canada. Our family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to Marianne Hilmoe who was a great friend and helper to Mom for many years. Also, thank you to all of the staff at the Good Samaritans for taking such good care of Mom for the past 10 ½ years. The funeral service will be held in VICTORY LUTHERAN CHURCH (2793 Southview Drive SE) on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Roland Weisbrot officiating. The service will be live streamed. Those who wish to attend virtually, please visit victorylutheran.ca/livestream. Interment will take place at a later date in the Piapot Cemetery.
