Nomination deadline for Cypress County’s Citizen of the Year Awards on Friday

Jun 13, 2024 | 5:47 PM

Nominations for Cypress County‘s annual Citizen of the Year and Junior Citizen of the Year Award will close at the end of the day Friday.

The award recognizes someone who has displayed continued dedication to a cause benefitting the citizens of Cypress County.

Sean Rooney, communications coordinator, said the award has been given out for a number of years, with the junior citizen award starting last year.

“We’re basically just asking people to think about people in the county who give more to our community, who are really upstanding citizens and are just great people to be around and do all kinds of stuff in the county,” Rooney said.

“There’s tons of them. We just want to hear who you think is the right person this year.”

Applications can be made of the Cypress County website through a form.

Rooney says the nomination process is simple.

“We ask you to give a little bit of information, give us some background on why you think they’re deserving of such an honour,” Rooney said.

“We’ve already got a few in already. We’re excited. There’s obviously some great nominations already, but the more the merrier.”

Awards will be given out at the Cypress County Welcome Centre in Walsh, Alta., as the highlight of the Celebrate Cypress County Day taking place July 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Rooney said, there will be lots of additional activity during the celebration.

“Food trucks, fire engines, all kinds of stuff going on. It’s a great day out there,” Rooney said.

“We’ve got displays, games for the kids, face painting. It’s just sort of a fun day out there. We might get the helicopter to land, but it all depends on the availability of a lot of these things,” he added.

“It’s just sort of a good day to come out and get together with fellow folks from the county and have a good time, a couple bites to eat.”
