May 16, 2024 | 10:00 PM

A severe thunderstorm watch for Medicine Hat and much of southeastern Alberta was lifted by Environment Canada on Thursday evening.

The Environment Canada status was activated for much of southeastern Albert and southwestern Saskatchewan on Thursday morning

The watch was upgraded to a severe thunderstorm warning early in the afternoon for areas near Drumheller and Stettler. The warning was dropped late Thursday afternoon.

Earlier on Thursday, a tornado warning was issued for an area about 200 kilometres north of Medicine Hat at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday and abruptly cancelled soon after.

Environment Canada said earlier that conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued earlier this week and are fairly common during the spring season.
