‘Meet others with shared interests’: Volunteers needed for growing Medicine Hat adaptive sports scene

May 2, 2024 | 4:57 PM

Four adaptive sport leagues are on the way to Medicine Hat this spring, giving athletes with physical and mental disabilities the chance to get active and be with friends.

But organizers need help.

With growing registrations and the addition of a new program, Medicine Hat Adaptive Sport and Recreation is in need of volunteers, program coordinator Tara Chisholm said on Thursday.

“Our Challenger baseball program is going to be wild and wonderful this year, because usually I plan for like 30 kids and last time little league sent me the numbers, we had 44,” Chisholm told CHAT News.

Adaptive cross fit is a new program being offered, as well as the yearly golf and cycling.

Volunteers will be helping to organize athletes, or even get involved in the games themselves.

Chisholm said there aren’t an abundance of options for people with disabilities to get involved in activities, so they are very grateful to volunteers who help change that.

She added that volunteering is also great for meeting people with similar values.

“It’s cool to meet others with shared interests,” Chisholm said.

“Someone who is just as invested in community and giving back, that’s also a great place to meet future friends or future people in your lives that otherwise you might not have ever connected to.”

Chisholm says they will find a job for anybody, whether you are sporty or not.

Those interested in volunteering are asked to email tara@parasports.net or visit the Medicine Hat Adaptive Sport and Recreation website.
