It is with sadness that the children of Mabel Ford announce her sudden passing on March 28, 2024, five years to the day of the death of her beloved husband, Edward.
Mabel Ford, born May 9, 1933, was the youngest of six children born to Halvor and Christina Odegard.
In fact, she was born on her father’s 42nd birthday and he delivered her at the family farm. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward; her parents, and her siblings, Richard, Lloyd, Mildred, Gladys, and Lillian.
Mabel is survived by her four children, Dale Ford, Douglas Ford, Lloyd Ford, and Myra Lightheart (Lyle Caldwell); grandchildren, Nathan Ford, Alex Ford, Derek Schween, Andrea Munro (Jason); great-grandchildren, London Munro, Davis Munro, Alleya Munro, Deacon Munro and Lauren Schween.
Born in Saskatchewan, in the dirty thirties, Mabel grew up knowing what it was to make the most of what you have: even the potato peels were used to make soup and old catalogues became cut-out dolls. Like many in Saskatchewan in those days, it was a struggle to keep the farm going and so Mabel and her parents moved to Medicine Hat where she lived throughout her life.
Mabel and Ed were married in 1952 at St. Barnabas Anglican Church and together they enjoyed making their house a home with gardening, building, remodelling; family meals and gatherings with friends. Mabel enjoyed sewing, reading, bowling, square dancing, and so much more. New technologies caught her attention and she not only acquired a home computer for herself but also made sure her children were on board. Travel was high on her list of things she enjoyed, whether it was summer camping at Elkwater or travels across Canada and abroad.
Mabel served as secretary at St. John’s Presbyterian Church for twenty years, where she not only facilitated the administration of the church but also forged many lifelong friendships. In her words, “St. John’s truly has a strong sense of family, a family to which I am thankful I belong.”
As children, we each have our own special memories of our Mom. She saw us and treated us as individuals and yet always brought us together as a family. She was a loving and supportive Granny to her grandchildren and enjoyed getting to meet her great-grandchildren.
Masterpiece Southlands Meadows was home to Mabel for her last six years and the family is deeply appreciative to the staff, some of whom feel like family, for their kind and excellent daily care for Mom.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Alzheimer Society of Canada for dementia research.
You are invited to join the family for an informal drop-in social on Tuesday, April 9th, between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm at the Saamis Memorial Creekside Reception Centre, #1 Dunmore Road SE, to share your favourite Mabel stories.
