Disagreements with Medicine Hat’s top staffer won’t dissuade mayor from what she believes is best for the city

Mayor Linnsie Clark says there will always be times where she will disagree with Medicine Hat’s top staffer while standing up for the city’s priorities.

“There’s always opportunity to have disagreements,” Clark said Tuesday on CHAT News at Noon.

“It’s important in my role to go with what I believe is best for the city and ensure that I’m doing what I was put here to do, which is ask questions,” the mayor added.

Clark was reflecting on her working relationship with City Manager Ann Mitchell since she started at the city a year ago.

“There’s always times where there’s going to be disagreement, but I think it’s important as leadership to try and do your best despite those disagreements,” she told anchor Dan Reynish.

Clark and Mitchell were involved in a tense exchange at an August 2023 council meeting over a corporate reorganization.

Clark felt that reorganization was done without following proper processes while Mitchell was upset with the line of questioning.

“I think this is highly inappropriate and I’d like to stop this discussion right now,” Mitchell said at the meeting.

An Edmonton-based law firm was hired in September to investigate a formal complaint about a council member made by another member of council.

Under the council code of conduct bylaw, respectful interactions with members, staff, the public and others are required. If another member feels this conduct has been violated, they can file a formal complaint in writing.

It has not been confirmed if that investigation is tied to the exchange between the mayor and city manager as details are being kept confidential.
