A Medicine Hat resident who had worked his way up the hockey ranks to play net in the National Hockey League has passed away at the age of 53.

Blaine Lacher played for the Boston Bruins for two seasons in the mid-1990s.

Over that time he appeared in 47 regular season and five NHL playoff games.

Lacher’s rookie season in the league was his strongest as he played in 35 of the Bruins 48 games and all five of their playoff games during the strikeout shortened 1994-95 NHL season.

Lacher even took home NHL rookie of the month honours in February 1995.

During this season his goals against average of 2.41 ranked fourth best in the league among goalies to play at least half of their teams games.

Earlier in Lacher’s career he spend time with the Medicine Hat Cubs winning two regular season championships during the 1986-1987 and 1987-1988 seasons, along with a league championship in that final season.

His number one jersey hangs in the rafters at the Kinplex arena, retired by the Cubs organization.

Lacher went on to play three season with the Melville Millionaires in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League winning the leagues top goaltending award during the 1990-91 season.

His collegiate hockey career was next playing in the NCAA for three seasons with the Lake Superior State University Lakers.

The Lakers made it to the national final every year Lacher was with the team winning the title in his first and last seasons.

In that final year Lacher lead the NCAA in both goals against average and save percentage before making his way to the NHL.

Lacher spent time in the American Hockey League with the Providence Bruins and the International Hockey League with both the Cleveland Lumberjacks and Grand Rapids Griffins before his professional came to an end during the 1996-97 season.

Sask West Hockey League fans will be familiar with the Lacher name as he spent a few seasons in net for the Oyen Eagles in the early 2000s.

Lacher passed away Jan. 29.
