Wiesblatt, St. Martin, McKenna prove themselves as strong starting lineup with Tigers’ wins

Claiming victory in three out of four games last week, the Medicine Hat Tigers are hitting crunch-time with over half their regular season complete.

With 28 goals in four games, the Medicine Hat Tigers were making Western Hockey League headlines at the outset of January.

It was Oasiz Wiesblatt, Hunter St. Martin and Gavin McKenna spearheading a 12-1 triumph over the Tri-City Americans and a 10-4 victory against the Spokane Chiefs on the weekend.

Of that three-man starting lineup, McKenna was named WHL player of the week.

“We really have clicked these past few games and they work hard,” McKenna said.

“We all work hard and we all work for each other.”

They’re a lineup that associate coach Joe Frazer believes has really taken off.

“When that line was put together, you got a lot of speed with St. Martin that can create space for guys like Gavin-o who have a ton of skill and great vision,” Frazer explained.

It was in the Tri-City Americans game on Saturday where St. Martin shined with a hat trick, his first in the WHL.

“I like to give a lot of credit to the guys,” St. Martin said.

“Personally, it’s a little bit of a confidence booster and it did feel really good.”

Coach Frazer said Wiesblatt, leading the team in assists, has shown how much he’s grown since joining the team at 16.

“This year he’s way more focused on not getting frustrated, and being that skilled player that we need him to be, but he’s been outstanding,” Frazer said.

“He takes a lot of abuse from opponents, like, he’s always getting cross checked, always getting hit in the face and it can get frustrating, but I think he’s doing a really good job not retaliating this year.”

Wiesblatt said it’s what goes on off the ice that translates to the lineups on-ice chemistry.

“I think the number one thing is that we’re a family in Medicine Hat,” Wiesblatt said.

“We do everything together.”

Wiesblatt admitted he’s had the upcoming WHL trade deadline on his mind, causing some nerves.

At 3 p.m. MT tomorrow, the Medicine Hat Tigers must lock-in their roster for the season.

However, as the players stand by and wait for potential trade announcements, Wiesblatt said all he can do is keep his head down work hard and hope for more positive results like the ones they saw last week.
