LETHBRIDGE, AB – People who currently or formerly served in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) will be able to visit any of the country’s national parks for free.

The federal government announced that the change will take effect on January 1, 2024, for CAF members, Veterans of the CAF, and their immediate families.

Minister of National Defence Bill Blair said he applauds the decision by Ottawa and Parks Canada.

“Our people in uniform make enormous sacrifices to protect Canada, and free daily admission to Parks Canada facilities is a great way to thank them for their service. In addition, Parks Canada facilities provide our military community with important opportunities to stay healthy – both mentally and physically,” said Blair.

Ron Hallman, President and CEO of Parks Canada, adds that when people spend time in nature, it is beneficial for their physical and mental health.

Eligible people will have to present their FC One Platinum Card, which is administered through Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services. Veterans can also show their Veteran’s Service Card, which is available to any former member of the CAF who completed their basic training and has been honourably released.

Parks Canada manages a network of 171 national historic sites, 47 national parks, five national marine conservation areas, and one national urban park.

Free entry to these places is already granted to people aged 17 and under, new Canadian citizens and landed immigrants for their first year, as well as site-specific daily amission for Indigenous peoples and expropriated families.
