Bun Gogh Art: Bunnies get artistic to support Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue

Dec 20, 2023 | 6:50 PM

MEDICINE HAT — Bun Gogh Art, it’s like a skating rink for bunnies. At least that’s what Amanda Hennessey calls it, president of the Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue.

“We take a canvas and put paint on it. Bunnies actually hate being dirty, so we put the canvas in a plastic bag so that they don’t get their paws dirty,” said Hennessey. “Then they just slide around on it.”

The ‘Bun Gogh’ paintings are sold, with all proceeds going towards vet bills and food for Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue.

Bunny Run is a volunteer-based organization that rescues a growing population of domestic bunnies in Medicine Hat, which originated from pets being dumped outside.

The rescue currently has 53 domestic bunnies in their care, but estimates there are almost 400 around the city.

Hennessey says the bunnies quickly adjust to human interaction and make for great pets.

“These domestic breed bunnies come in all different colors and are so different,” Hennessey explained.

“They’ve even done brain scans that show how different they are from the wild bunnies, so they just don’t have the sense to hide from predators and to find food the proper way.”

“Dumping your pet bunny would be kind of like putting your chihuahua outside. Like, it’s not like a coyote it’s not built for it.”

Bunny Run Rescue offers essential care items for those interested in fostering or potentially adopting a bunny. The foster and adoption process involves a meeting with the Bunny Run president to assess the suitability of a family to provide a suitable home for a pet.

To support the operational costs of Bunny Run Rescue, there is an adoption fee of $75 for a single bunny and $125 for a pair.
