EDMONTON, AB – Alberta Health Services named a new president and CEO on Thursday.

Athana Mentzelopoulos will take over the position previously held by Mauro Chies.

Mentzelopoulos was previously the executive director of the Alberta Medical Association, and served as deputy minister in various portfolios in both the Alberta and B.C. governments.

Mentzelopoulos has previous experience with AHS from her time as EMS provisional lead and advisor to the official administrator within the organization.

Her hiring comes amid a major restructuring of Alberta’s health care system, including a new focus for the Alberta Health Services.

AHS executive board chair Dr. Lyle Oberg, who was recently appointed after the United Conservative government wiped the previous AHS board, welcomed the new president.

“She has a long history of public service leadership here in Canada,” Oberg said in a statement Thursday.

I look forward to working with her to support staff through the healthcare system refocus efforts underway, while keeping to AHS’ mandate of delivering high quality health services to all Albertans.”

Mentzelopoulos will begin her new role on Monday.
