Saskatchewan says parental consent needed for name, pronoun change

Aug 22, 2023 | 10:06 AM

REGINA — The Saskatchewan government has announced new policies for schools around students’ names, pronouns and sexual health education.

Education Minister Dustin Duncan says the province wants to standardize pronoun and naming policies, as they varied from one school division to another.

As of today, schools must get parental or guardian permission when changing the preferred name and pronouns used by students under 16.

Parents must also be informed about the sexual health education curriculum and have the option to decline their child’s participation.

The director of the Equality Program at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association is speaking out against Saskatchewan’s new policies for schools around students’ names, pronouns and sexual health education.
Harini Sivalingam says shredding the rights of students is repulsive and that implementing policy that could result in increased harm to vulnerable youth is disgraceful.
Sivalingam says some unsupportive families have kicked their transgender kids out of the house or resorted to physical violence.

Similar moves in New Brunswick earlier this year were faced by intense opposition by LGBT groups.
