With profound sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Ryan Patrick Haley, of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Loving father of Kieran, Lorenzo, and Valentina; cherished son of Ed and Cathy; confidant and big brother to Meghan (Chris) Bourgeois; fun, and vibrant Uncle, affectionately known as Uncle Ry Ry, to Jackson and Katy Bourgeois and boyfriend to Snježana Petrović.
Ryan was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Roy and Orient Winfield of Nipigon, Ontario, and paternal grandparents Ed and Bernadette Haley of Red Rock, Ontario.
Ryan was born September 2, 1980, in Elliot Lake Ontario. Throughout his childhood, his love of sports grew and he could always be found at the soccer field, basketball court, arena or on Marshland Lake at the family camp. Ryan attended Our Lady of Fatima School, where he forged an unbreakable friendship with Lance Landry, a forever friend, and brother. He graduated from Elliot Lake Secondary School in 1998, and from there he enrolled in Police Foundations at Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, however, life had different plans for him. On September 4, 1999, Ryan’s first outstanding achievement and biggest blessing, Kieran Patrick, was born and his life changed forever.
In 2001, Ryan attended Sir Sanford Fleming College in Peterborough Ontario, where he played varsity soccer for the Fleming Knights and was team captain for a year. He graduated in 2004 with his Recreation and Leisure Services Diploma and then took to traveling. Spending time in New York, Australia, and British Columbia, Ryan always found time to call home and share stories of his travels. Upon returning from traveling, Ryan settled in North Bay, Ontario, and started working at Project D.A.R.E, where he made many friendships. He and his sister have many fond memories of being back together and spending time together. It was in North Bay that his love of music changed forever. He enjoyed playing at Open Mic Nights with his friends (Bowmantine) and then the creation of Minus the Royals happened. With his bandmates (Chris and Sean) they traveled Ontario, played at the Horseshoe Tavern, and even cut a CD. He poured his heart and soul into his lyrics and was incredibly proud of his accomplishments. Following his time in North Bay, Ryan chose to complete his apprenticeship in Steam Fitting and Pipe Fitting. He completed his coursework in Toronto and took a leap of faith and moved out west to finish his program. Ryan worked various jobs while in Alberta, met many new friends, and finally settled down in Medicine Hat. On February 11, 2016, Ryan welcomed his second blessing, Lorenzo Patrick, and to complete his heart, Valentina Nova was born on April 10, 2017.
Ryan loved his children more than anything. They were his pride and joy. Nothing made him happier than being with them, playing hockey with Kieran, or taking Lorenzo and Valentina on a bike ride or to “the water house”. He was beyond elated when Kieran joined him out west and in the workforce this past year. Having all three of his children in the same province made him the happiest man on earth.
Ryan could command a room like no other—his warm smile and infectious laugh were always the centre of attention. He could often be heard telling stories about his “buddies“, recounting a sporting event, or just simply telling the people in his life that he loved and missed them.
He was a joy to be around. His qualities of kindness, intelligence, and unwavering passion were truly cherished by those around him. He lived in the moment, lived life to the fullest, and didn’t take anything for granted. Ryan’s presence and friendship will be deeply missed, but he will forever live on in our memories, hearts, and in so many songs.
Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at a later date.
A Celebration of Life for family and friends will take place at a later date.
