Lawrence “Larry” Hankins passed away peacefully on Monday, June 5, 2023 at the age of 70 years, beloved husband of Penny Hankins of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory two children, Christina (Michael) Bunting and Benjamin (Jill) Hankins; his grandchildren, Mackenzie Hankins, Kian Hankins, and William Bunting; two sisters, Stella (Ralph) Arndt and Faith (Neil) Schattle; his life long best friend John Kahl; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Lucille and Lawrence Hankins; his sister, Anne Marie Pielak; grandparents, Grace and Francis Goller; parents-in-law, Doreen and Bill Wray along with numerous aunts and uncles. The man, the myth, the legend. Larry was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on May 26, 1953 to Lawrence and Lucille Hankins. At the age of six, the family relocated to Medicine Hat where he took his schooling, graduating from Crescent Heights High School in 1971. Shortly after graduation, Larry married Penny Wray on July 6, 1974. At this point the adventure began. Larry joined Halliburton which took them to many places in Alberta and the North West Territories, including High Level, Inuvik, and Whitecourt where they welcomed their daughter. In 1980, dad left the oil patch and the family relocated to Calgary, where he pursued his dream of owning his own bowling alley “Toppler Bowl”. A son was added in 1981 completing the family. They soon moved back to Medicine Hat where the roots finally stuck. Dad again found himself drawn to the bowling industry working at Panorama Lanes. After a few years, he purchased two shares in Deluxe Central Taxi which he proudly owned and operated for over 20 years until he was forced into an early retirement due to health concerns. Dad loved fishing, camping, bowling, going to Tigers hockey games, playing cards and visiting with friends. He also enjoyed time with his children and grandchildren who were the apple of his eye. Until we meet again, keep the bowling alley ready. At Larry’s request, no funeral service will be held. A celebration of life will occur at a later date. Those who wish to remember Larry with a donation may do so to the Heart and Stroke Foundation www.heartandstroke.ca. To leave a message of condolence you may visit www.pattisonfuneralhome.com.
