Pedal into summer with Redcliff library bicycle loans

REDCLIFF, AB – Starting today, bicycles are once again ready for loan at the Redcliff library. This loaning system was originally started in 2019, with some bumps due to COVID. Now, the process of borrowing a bike is like taking out a library book.

There are currently six adult bikes available, and two for kids. Last year, one bike was stolen from the bike rack outside of the library. Since then, cameras were installed to prevent more theft.

These bikes are not limited to local residents alone. Anyone with an Alberta library card can borrow a bike by registering their card on the Shortgrass Library System website. For those under 18, a guardian must help the child sign the bike out.

Library director Tracy Laturnus says the borrowing system has had positive feedback from community members.

“The community is very happy that we’re doing it. We’ve had kids that do annual bike rides with school where the kids didn’t have a bike, so they came here and borrowed one so they got to participate. We’ve had people from the campground come and borrow them, so everybody’s been really receptive to it,” Laturnus says.

Bikes are available during library hours, and must be returned by the end of each day.
