Alberta campgrounds gearing up for busy summer

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Many residents are cleaning out their RVs, airing out their tents and rolling up their sleeping bags as they gear up for another camping season.

It was a bit of a late start to the season in our region as heavy snowfall prevented some camping sites from opening on time.

Perry Andreas is doing a little spring cleaning like other campers at Golden Sheaf Park.

Andreas, like many campers, plans to set up the RV and access the campground the entire season.

“It’s a hidden gem. You know there’s so many beautiful things to do out here you know you can bring your kids, you have the beach for people who are interested in fishing there’s magnificent fishing out here,” says Andreas.

The camping season started a little later this year. Snow drifts prevented Golden Sheaf Park from opening at full capacity last month. Normally the campground is fully open on April 15 but this year the campground was only 80 per cent open at that time.

However, with the recent warm streak, manager Dave Scott says the campground is quickly filling up.

“Demand is pretty high. We have a number of seasonal campsites that people hold year-over-year. We also have a number of monthly sites, bi-weekly sites all the way right down to overnight sites and tenting sites. So the demand right now is pretty high, people are recognizing this nice wonderful weather and we are getting a lot of calls to book in,” says Scott.

Scott says it should be a busy summer for campers in Alberta as weather experts are predicting a hot summer and campsites are going to be busy.

“My advice, whether you’re booking in here or anywhere, book as early as possible. Except that most campgrounds including this one would ask you to pay something up front and that way we can book it in and there’s not so much loss if at the last minute they change their minds or are not able to come out,” he explains.

Scott also says it’s important to prepare for hot weather. Campers CHAT News spoke with shared tips they use to beat the heat.

“Air conditioning, absolutely. Long-term summer camping on plains requires air conditioning,” said a man enjoying Rattlesnake Lake.

Another couple setting up their campsite told CHAT News, “Obviously drink a lot of water. We have water here at the sites and if it gets too hot just water the lawn and you get that little spray off and if you want to put your lawn chair right in there and sit in there it’s fine too.”

Andreas says “The best ticket on that one is a cooler full of nice cold beer or you know any refreshments you may like, whatever floats your boat.”

If you are enjoying a cooler of beer under the sun, remember to keep your neighbours in mind, have some common sense and follow the rules of the campground and be sure to check for any local fire bans before heading out and enjoying the great outdoors.
