Medicine Hat College students flying to Costa Rica for educational trip

Feb 1, 2023 | 5:14 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s not everyday that you go to the tropics for educational purposes.

But, seven Medicine Hat college students will experience that once-in-a-lifetime moment next month on a trip to Costa Rica.

The Global Skilled Opportunities program, which is aimed at diversifying education, helped fund the trip.

Leading up to flight, the college’s Indigenous services is helping the students prepare. Currently, students are learning about colonization, traditional medicines, and the way of life of the Indigenous people, both in Canada and in Costa Rica.

While on their trip in Costa Rica, students will fully emerse themselves in the Bribri Indigenous culture, which includes hiking in the mountains, arts and crafts and engaging in the tribe’s day-to-day activities.

“Because everyday is going to be different, different interactions and more experiences can make our interpersonal relationships stronger and reach out to others,” said Nikki Paley, one of the students selected.

The students say they are excited to learn about the differences between their culture and the Bribri peoples.
