BROCKET, AB – The Piikani Nation is mourning the loss of a former leader.

Officials have announced the passing of former Chief Stan Grier at the age of 63. Grier served as Piikani Nation Chief for two terms, from 2015 to 2023.

Born on April 26, 1959, Grier carved a successful career in law enforcement before running for public office. His time in law enforcement included him being named the first Chief of Police for the newly-formed Tsuut’ina Police Service.

In a statement, the Piikani Nation said that Grier “was a dedicated Chief despite recent health issues. Notably, Stan [led] Piikani through the COVID pandemic with a highly successful mitigation strategy.”

“Stan will be remembered for his constant good spirits, collaboration with staff and council members, and dedication to making Piikani a Nation where there was progress on economic development and Nation-owned business.”

Grier is survived by his wife Avril, four children, and three grandchildren.
