1938 – Ernie Albrecht – 2022
Ernest “Ernie” Albrecht of Medicine Hat, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at the age of 84 years, beloved husband of the late Shirley Albrecht. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Kim (Dale) Mendryk; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Courtney Mendryk (Cam Fox) and Shae-Lynn Mendryk (Carter Patey) and their children Holden and Blake; one brother Marvin (Alvena) Albrecht; sister-in-law Shirley Albrecht as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley on May 23, 2020; his parents Christina and Carl Albrecht; three brothers Carl (Eleanor), Edwin (Violet) and Clarence; one sister Esther (Richard) Eisenbarth; his sister-in-law Lola (Frank) Coffey and their son Chuck. He also leaves to cherish his memory Lola’s children Tom Coffey, Janice (Danny) Holmedal and Russ (Kelly) Coffey. Ernie was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan and grew up working hard on the farm near Leader Saskatchewan, before he moved to the big city of Medicine Hat after grade school. Here he met Shirley and they quickly fell in love and married in 1960. They built their first home on McKenzie Crescent and have lived there ever since. Not long after, they welcomed their beautiful baby girl Kimberly into the world. They spent short stints in Calgary while Ernie was at tech school learning mechanics, and he then found work as a mechanic in a car dealership garage in Medicine Hat until he started his journey as a fireman in 1970. Ernie worked his way up from firehall mechanic to Captain and made many lifelong friends during his 28 successful and impactful years at the firehall. Ernie eventually retired in 1998. He continued to enjoy his coffee time at the fire hall with the firehall boys and also enjoyed the coffees and chatter with friends at the mall, Tim Hortons or A&W. Ernie, Shirley and Kim spent many summers hauling the camper and aluminum boat out to various lakes fishing and adventuring. Ernie found joy in maintaining his yard and was well known in the community for his pristine lawn and flowers. Ernie also had an affinity and gift for restoring old tractors and motors, and a certain knack for crafting up things in the garage. From welding to wood work, Ernie enjoyed keeping busy. Ernie took great pride in his family, especially his time spent with his granddaughters and great grandchildren.
