UCP MLA says premier has created a culture of fear in caucus

Apr 26, 2022 | 3:44 PM

EDMONTON – One of Jason Kenney’s caucus members says the Alberta premier is reaping what he has sown through personal attacks, dividing people and intimidating opponents.

Peter Guthrie says Kenney has created a culture of fear in the United Conservative caucus – and that’s why opponents are rising up from within the party to challenge him.

Guthrie represents Airdrie-Cochrane for Kenney’s UCP, and is one of a number of backbenchers speaking out against Kenney ahead of a leadership vote.

Kenney says his leadership is being challenged by opponents unhappy with some of his decisions on COVID-19.

Guthrie and other backbenchers say it’s much more.

They say Kenney and a close circle of advisers are running a top-down operation and have no interest in listening to the grassroots.

In recent days, the premier’s critics have been waging a public war of words with staff in Kenney’s office, who have referred to the dissidents as sad, sour clowns.
